Do you still have questions?
The ESL Institute at Austin Peay offers a Student Handbook
with a variety of information that will be useful to you as you begin your
studies with us. We strongly encourage all students and their Clarksville
sponsor or family to become familiar with the information provided in the
Student Handbook. Please contact us at the ESL Institute if you need further
information - we are here to help you.
Do you need a Social Security number?
Many business and landlords ask for a social security card because they
typically check an individual's credit history. However, as an international
student new to the U.S., you do not have a credit history. They might tell
you that a social security number is required, but although it is the most
common form of identification in the U.S., it is not the only form legally
acceptable.
for more details about social security numbers and if you really need to
have this form of identification as an international student. This printable
brochure will also provide contact information for the local Clarksville
area social security office.
Do you need a Tennessee driver's license?
If applying for a driver's license, you do not need a social security
number. You DO need your passport and I-20, and you must be prepared to wait
in long lines at the driver's license office (it is not uncommon to wait one
or two hours). You will need to take both a written and a driving test and
pay a fee for the license.
