Snyder Scholarship Endowment
Austin Peay State University
has been fortunate over the years to have generous
donors to recognize influential professors through the
establishment of endowed scholarships bearing those
professors’ names.
David
Snyder, distinguished professor of biology,
herpetologist, ornithologist, family man, and engaging
colleague died unexpectedly in May, 2004, an active and
exuberant teacher at the age of 65.
Those
of you who have worked alongside Dr. Snyder in the
science programs here at Austin Peay know what a loss
the university has suffered.
To
honor Professor Snyder’s 39 years of service to the
community, Dr. Steven Wallace has given the university
$50,000 with a challenge to Austin Peay and fellow
donors to match the gift in order to establish the David
Snyder Memorial Scholarship Endowment. Such scholarships
provide an excellent way to remember the positive and
influential attributes of the individuals for whom they
are named.
In Dr.
Snyder’s case, the type of mind he demonstrated in his
work and hope his students might emulate: curiosity,
skepticism, an awe of nature, an eagerness to learn more
about the world and our natural place in it, an
unabashed joy in the simple thrills of existence, a
broad range of interests in and enjoyment of subjects
other than the one he taught, a genuine delight in
learning and sharing his knowledge.
We hope
that you will not only join us in honoring an
outstanding professor but also in providing scholarships
for talented students, some of whom will be potential
professors of biology who can learn about and follow Dr.
Snyder’s example in learning and teaching.
