Palustrine Communities

Palustrine wetlands are defined here according to the definition of the Cowardin classification. Two major categories are recognized. Herbaceous palustrine wetlands are communities dominated by herbaceous species such as graminoids, forbs, and ferns and where woody plants (trees and shrubs) cover less than 30% of the uppermost stratum. Forested, wooded, and shrub wetlands are those where woody plants dominate and cover 30% or more of the site.
