Floodplain Shrub Swamp

Floodplain shrub swamp communities are found in topographic depressions within the active floodplains of large rivers. Shrub swamps often grow in deeper water than adjacent forested swamps and they often form a ring around emergent marsh or open water. Shrub swamps found primarily in the Mississippi Alluvial Plain, Loess Plain Meander Belts, WEstern Valley of the Tennessee River, Cumberland River floodplain, and the Tennessee River floodplain in the Ridge and Valley.
