Southern Bogs

The term "Southern Bog" is here used to refer to herbaceous, saturated, acidic wetlands of Southern Appalachian coves and valley bottoms. Unlike "Northern" Bogs which are ombotrophic (rainwater fed with no stream outlets), Southern Bogs are fed by groundwater seepage (and rainwater) and often are drained by small streamlets. Due to their hydrologic source, i.e. groundwater, Southern Bogs have been identified by some as highly acidic, mineral poor (oligotrophic) fens known as poor fens. In contrast, classic, alkaline, mineral-rich fens of the classic sense are referred by some as rich fens.
