Woodlands

Woodlands are communities dominated by trees. In this respect they are similar to forests. Woodlands differ from forests, however, by their generally shorter-statured and more open canopy (30-75% canopy coverage vs. 75-100% in forests), trees with spreading crowns, absent subcanopy, sparse shrub layer, and an herb layer rich in grasses and summer/fall flowering herbs. Woodland communities occur throughout the state but are generally found in dry to xeric landscapes. Fire is generally imporant in most woodland types with the exception of some of those associated with very steep slopes in mountainous regions that are on relatively fire-protected landforms. Flatwoods are a type of forested wetland that are found in flat landscapes and have soils which alternate seasonally between satured, ponded, and dry conditions (hydroxeric). Some riparian communities are also woodlands and are maintained primarily by frequent seasonal flooding instead of fire. Flatwoods and riparian woodlands are treated separately under Woody Wetlands
