Health and Human Performance Major: Health Care Management Concentration

The health care management concentration provides students the opportunity to prepare for employment as a manager in nursing homes, hospitals, regional, state or local health departments, home health care agencies, health maintenance organizations, surgical care centers, insurance companies, physician group practices, and voluntary health agencies.

To earn a degree in Health and Human Performance with a concentration in Healthcare Management, the student must earn 120 total hours.  The curriculum requires the students to take APSU 1000 (1 hour), 41 general education hours, 49 hours in the major, and 29 elective hours. 

The following lists the courses and course descriptions for the 46 hours in Healthcare Management:

HHP 2250 - Public Health Essentials (3 hours)

Pre/Corequisite: HHP 1250

Public Health Essentials is intended to serve as an introductory framework for public health and the public health profession.  This course provides an overview of public health concepts and practice including history, purpose, functions, activities, theory, and philosophy.

HHP 3000 - Health Care Management (3 hours)

Prerequisite: Sophomore standing or permission of department chair
A study of the principles of effective health care management functions, including planning, organizing, leading, controlling, and processes of decision-making and communication.

HHP 3450 - Health Issues of Special Populations (3 hours)

Prerequisite: HHP 2050 or WS 2050 or 2000 level sociology course or permission of instructor
This course examines the interaction of social, environmental and biological determinants of health. Students will be introduced to the major concepts, problems and programming associated with U.S. health disparities related to gender, race and ethnicity, place, age and socioeconomic position.

HHP 3510 - Health Care Economics (3 hours)

Prerequisite: HHP 3000 
Analysis of issues in health care using economic tools and models as applied to the delivery of health care services.

HHP 3630 - Health Care Financial Analysis (3 hours)

Prerequisite: MATH 1530, HHP 3000
Financial management theory, principles, and concepts applicable to health care organizations and systems.

HHP 3640 - Human Resources in Health Care (3 hours)

Prerequisite: Sophomore standing or permission of department chair
Integration of human resources management systems with special issues in health care environments.

HHP 4390 - Strategic Planning and Policy (3 hours)

Prerequisite: HHP 3630
The study of policy and planning techniques applied to organizations in the health care delivery system.

HHP 4500 – Epidemiology and Biostatistics (3 hours)

Prerequisite: MATH 1530, junior standing or permission of department chair
Examination of epidemiological concepts in relation to specific public health issues. Disease investigation techniques, causal factors, case histories, and related biostatistics are examined and educational implications are discussed.

HHP 4600 - Public Health Law (3 hours)

Prerequisite: Junior standing or permission of department chair
The study of federal and state legal systems affecting health care administration and wellness promotion programs.

HHP 4989 - Pre-Internship and Career Seminar (1 hour)

Prerequisite: Senior standing
Students will engage in key processes required to prepare for the internship experience including paperwork preparation, investigation of internship sites, preparing a resume, and practice intervention skills.  Key concepts related to career planning will also be presented; such as, career/graduate school options, networking and professional behaviors.

HHP 4990 - Internship in Health and Human Performance (12 hours)

The internship consists of 360 work or contact hours of observation and participation from selected agencies, corporations or organizations. Grading on a pass/fail basis. Note: Students must be within 12 hours of finishing degree requirements after completing HHP 4990 except with permission of department chair.

ACCT 3001 - Foundations of Accounting (3 hours)

Introduction to financial and managerial accounting theory and practice with emphasis on the role of accounting information in business decisions.

MKT 3001 -Introduction to Marketing

Designed for students studying disciplines other than business.  This course provides an introduction to the marketing mix functions and process, including an examination of the marketing decisions a firm must make.  Includes identification of consumer and organizational needs and explanation of environmental issues.  Ethical and international issues are addressed. 

PHIL 2300 - Medical Ethics

Application of moral theory to major issues of biomedical ethics: the patient-professional relationship, abortion, euthanasia, allocation of medical resources, genetic engineering, and research involving human subjects.
