Student
Organizations
Student organizations at Austin Peay State University include social
sororities and fraternities, professional and honor societies,
departmental clubs, and various religious organizations. Additionally,
nursing students have opportunities to participate in several discipline
specific organizations.
- The Austin Peay Student
Nurses' Association Chapter (SNA) of the Tennessee Association of Student Nurses is a
nonprofit organization to aid in the development of the individual
student of nursing as a future health professional, to be aware of
and contribute to improving the health of all people. A faculty
member from the School of Nursing is selected each year to act as
advisor and faculty representative (National Student Nurses' Association)
Student members of the APSNA are introduced to the professional
role of political activism in nursing. Members of the APSNA shall be
enrolled in the Austin Peay State University School of Nursing. Honorary
members shall consist of all students enrolled in APSU who are
pre-nursing majors. Membership in the APSNA is optional but highly
recommended as an integral portion of the preparation of the professional
nurse. Information on membership can be obtained in the office of the
School of Nursing or from the faculty advisor.
- Sigma Theta Tau, International Nursing Honor Society of Nursing, Nu Phi
Chapter. The APSU Chapter of Sigma Theta Tau was chartered in 1994.
Currently, there are more than 160 members in the Nu Phi chapter.
More that 220,000 nurse scholars have been inducted into Sigma Theta
Tau International, making it the second largest nursing organization
in the United States and one of the largest in the word.
Sigma Theta Tau is committed to fostering excellence, scholarship
and leadership in nursing to improve health care world wide. The Society
promotes the use of nursing research in health care delivery and makes
its resources available to all people and institutions interested in the
latest knowledge in nursing care.
Membership is by invitation, conferred on students in
baccalaureate and graduate nursing programs who demonstrate excellence in
scholarship, and to qualified college graduates demonstrating exceptional
achievement in nursing.
