Textbooks, Supplementary Materials, Hardware and Software Requirements

Required Textbook:

Elementary Statistics, 7th edition, by Neil Weiss.  Pearson/Addison Wesley.  The textbook is available either:

  1. From the Austin Peay Bookstore for $178.25, which includes the hard copy of the book, CourseCompass access, and a Student Edition of Minitab Statistical Software, or

  2. Directly from CourseCompass/MyMathLab for $72.00 (see below for Course ID), which does not include a hard copy of the book but does include an electronic (online) copy of the book, and CourseCompass access.  This also does not include the Minitab Statistical Software; however, you can either use the lab computers for the Minitab projects, or you can purchase six-month access to Minitab for $29.99.

Required Supplementary Materials:

  • Minitab Statistical Software (may use lab licenses on lab computers)
  • MyMathLab in CourseCompass (Course ID = smyth50332)
  • TI-83 or TI-84 calculator

Required E-Section Lab Materials:

If you are also in the lab portion of the course, Section 70E, which meets from 11:15 to 1:05, then you will also need access to the lab CourseCompass shell:  Course ID = sanders16607.

Assignments

Throughout the course, you will have:

  1. Four Minitab assignments - Similar to Excel, Minitab is a statistical software, which comes shrink-wrapped with new books from the AP bookstore.  We will be using Minitab with several problems throughout the course as a data analysis tool.
  2. Ten Quizzes - One quiz for each chapter.  The quiz questions will most closely resemble questions in the online homework.
  3. Paper Homework, Collected Twice - The assigned paper homework (including textbook problems, internet problems, midterm and final reviews, and a case study) will be collected for a grade at the midterm and final exams.
  4. Online Homework - Ten homework assignments covering each chapter must be completed through MyMathLab in CourseCompass.
  5. Midterm and Final Exams - The midterm exam will be approximately one hour in length covering Chapters 1 through 5, and the comprehensive final exam will be approximately two hours in length covering Chapters 1 through 9 and 12.

Course Ground Rules

This course could be much more demanding and time consuming than other courses, depending on how prepared you are mathematically. You should expect to dedicate at the very least 12 to 18 hours a week to this course, outside of class and lab time.  Block out at least six to nine hours between each class meeting to do your homework for the course.  If you cannot block a minimum of six hours between each class, I recommend discussing other course options with your advisor.

Students are responsible for learning the technical aspects in this course, including how to navigate the TI-83/84 calculator, Desire2Learn, MyMathLab, and Minitab.  Students are expected to seek help for technical problems immediately.

Students are expected to complete paper and online homework, Minitab projects, quizzes, and exams on time. If an assignment is one day late, then only half credit will be given. If an assignment is more than one day late, no credit will be given.

All work must be completed by the enrolled student, though collaboration is allowed on homework and Minitab projects. Collaboration of any kind is not allowed during quizzes and exams and will be considered cheating, resulting in an F for the entire course.

Minors, any non-student under the age of 18, accompanying staff, faculty, students, or visitors on campus are not permitted in the classroom.

Expected Class Conduct

  1. Be nice and respectful.
  2. Avoid being out of your seat during class.
  3. Avoid private conversations or any other distractions.
  4. If a cell phone rings, that phone gets answered by the instructor.

Students With Disabilities

Austin Peay State University abides by Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973, which stipulates that no student shall be denied the benefits of an education "solely by reason of a handicap." Disabilities covered by law include, but are not limited to, learning disabilities and hearing, sight, or mobility impairments. If you have a documented disability that may have some impact on your work in this class and for which you may require reasonable accommodations, communicate with me or Disabilities Services in Clement 140, 221-6230 or 221-6278 (V/TTY), so that such reasonable accommodations may be arranged.

Syllabus Changes

The instructor reserves the right to make changes as necessary to this syllabus. If changes are necessitated during the term of the course, the instructor will immediately notify students of such changes either in class or by email.
