One of the strongest influences on college retention is involvement. When school is just a job, sometimes it is a little easier to quit. After all, it doesn't pay you and the rewards can seem far and few between.
That's why universities like Austin Peay set up so many opportunities for students to get involved. From student organizations to extra-curricular lectures and recreational field trips, the connections you make while tending to this part of your university experience can last a lifetime and provide you with inspiration right when you need it most.
Check out below for ways to get involved by joining student organizations and/or attending campus events.
The biggest high impact experience for students is student organization involvement. Click here to find societies, clubs, and organizations relevant to your college life. There are two organizations at APSU specifically catering to nontraditional and students, but nontraditional and transfer students should also consider joining other organizations.
NTSS was founded in the Fall of 2011 and existed on campus before the ANTS Center! Their advocacy and concern for nontraditional student success was pivotal in getting the ANTS Center opened. Join them to express your concerns, meet others like yourself, and advocate for future nontraditionals at APSU.
This chapter of the Alpha Sigma Lambda, the national honor society of nontraditional students, is open to adult learners who are in the top 20% of their class. If you are an upperclassman (anything above a freshman) and you maintain a GPA of 3.2 or better, you are eligible to join this organization for great scholarship, networking, and resume building opportunities.
The Student Veterans Organization is open to all students and serves Veterans and their families at Austin Peay. When transitioning from military culture to higher education, why not do it together. Peer to Peer experience and celebration of achievement mark this important organization for our nontraditional military learners.
Campus Events
Attending events is also an easy way to be involved. Just sign up, show up, and start enjoying yourself! Attendance leads to support networks, not to mention free food and other perks! Events for the entire campus can be found here on PeayLink. Check out the events the Adult, Nontraditional & Transfer Center are hosting this semester:
