Dr. Emily Hanna Crane enjoys a dynamic career as a performer and educator. She joined
the faculty of Austin Peay State University in 2008 as the Professor of Music and
the Coordinator of the Orchestral Strings Area where she teaches violin, viola, folk
music ensemble, chamber music, and string methods. Dr. Crane is also a Suzuki-registered
teacher with a vibrant local studio.
A founding member of Clarksville’s Gateway Chamber Orchestra, Dr. Crane has performed
as concertmaster and can be heard on GCO's second commercial recording, Chamber Symphonies,
which was released by Summit Records in May 2012. In addition to the GCO, Dr. Crane
has served as concertmaster and associate concertmaster of the Valley (S. Tex.) and
Tallahassee (Fla.) Symphony Orchestras, principal second violin of the Paducah (Ky.)
Symphony and the Parthenon Chamber Orchestra (Tenn.), and has played in the violin
sections of several orchestras including the Nashville Ballet, Nashville Opera, and
the Nashville, Jacksonville (Fla.), Paducah (Ky.), Bryan (Tenn.), Laredo (Tex.), and
Columbus (Ga.) Symphony Orchestras. Dr. Crane has given solo and chamber concerts
across the U. S., Taiwan, Canada, Italy, Germany, Austria, Switzerland, the Czech
Republic, England, and Wales. She has performed solo concertos with the Gateway Chamber,
APSU Symphony, Trevecca Symphony, Parthenon Chamber, and the Valley Symphony Orchestras.
As a chamber musician, she has been as a member of chatterbird (Nashville, Tenn.),
Intersection (Nashville, Tenn.), the Hanna-Yang Duo, Tango Sur (Tallahassee, Fla.),
Quartet alla Turca, and the Eppes Quartet (FSU). Dedicated to promoting contemporary
music, Dr. Crane has premiered several works by living composers including Jeffrey
Wood (Sonata for violin and piano, 2013), Clifton Callender (Metamorphoses II, 2009,
on Pendulum, Navona Records, Parma Recordings), and Ju-Hwan Yu (Sonata No. 1 for violin and piano,
2004, Kum-Seong Records). She continues to perform on numerous film and video game
soundtracks as a studio musician in Nashville.
Dr. Crane is an active adjudicator, clinician, and coach for summer festivals, honor
orchestras, and conferences across the country. She is an active member of the American
String Teachers Association (Member at Large for the Executive Board 2022-2024, Tennessee
Chapter President 2015-2018) and the Suzuki Association of the Americas.
Dr. Crane earned degrees in violin performance from Florida State University (Doctor
of Music and Master of Music, studies with Eliot Chapo, Gary Kosloski, Karen Clarke)
and the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill (Bachelor of Music, studies with
Richard Luby). Additional teachers include Kenneth Goldsmith, Kevin Lawrence, and
Mary Jane Kirkendol as well as viola pedagogy with Pamela Ryan and Dana Meyer.
