Common Concerns
Is membership expensive?
Greeks pay dues every semester to help cover the cost of national or international fees, operating expenses and social functions. Costs vary by organization, so your child should ask about expense and payment plans during recruitment. In general, new members pay higher dues during their first semester and lower dues once they are initiated members.
Will my child be safe?
APSU’s Greek chapters work closely with the Office of Student Affairs to create a responsible and safe environment for Greeks and their guests. All chapters have strict policies concerning alcohol consumption and are held accountable according to the University’s code of conduct and Tennessee law.
Is hazing a part of the fraternity & sorority experience?
Austin Peay has a zero-tolerance policy on hazing, consistent with state law. Hazing includes any activity that subjects members to harassment, ridicule, intimidation, abuse, mental distress or physical exhaustion.
Please call the Office of Student Affairs at (931) 221-6570 if you ever suspect your child may be participating in inappropriate activities as a result of membership in a fraternity or sorority. Calls will be handled discreetly.
Who oversees fraternity & sorority chapters?
Each chapter has elected officers, alumni advisors, the support of its national/international Greek organization. In addition, the Office of Fraternity & Sorority Affairs, which is supported by Student Life & Engagement, provides advisement, guidance, and support for each chapter and council.
