Operation: STEM Success
Covid-19 has hit our lives in so many ways for which we had no way to plan nor prepare. One of the issues we have had to face as a community is moving back and forth from remote learning in the schools. While this has impacted all students in all classes, reports from the Clarksville and Montgomery County School System (CMCSS) have indicated Chemistry and Algebra I are the classes posing the most significant hurdle for students at the high school level.
Operation: STEM Success is a FREE tutoring program offered through the Austin Peay Foundation to the CMCSS students taking Algebra I and/or Chemistry. Any CMCSS student struggling in one or both of these classes can sign up for this tutoring program to help bridge the gap that Covid may have caused in their education. There is no obligation: students who sign up can request 1-hour tutoring sessions biweekly, weekly, or as-needed.
The tutors are Austin Peay students majoring in STEM fields who have had extensive coursework in the areas of math and/or chemistry. The students selected as tutors have gone through a rigorous selection process to ensure their proficiency in their discipline and their interest in working with struggling students. Tutors have a completed background check and will be working closely with mentor teachers in CMCSS to keep up with the curriculum as the semester progresses.
Students, regardless of their grades in a class, can benefit from tutoring. This tutoring program focuses specifically on:
- Providing supplemental instruction to clarify difficult topics
- Helping students with homework
- Studying for exams and quizzes
- Helping build confidence in the course material
Tutoring will take place through ZOOM Web Conferencing.
