About the ESL Institute
The Austin Peay State University English as a Second (ESL) Institute’s non-credit intensive English language program was created in 1998.
The mission of the ESL Institute is to serve current and prospective international students and community members by offering a diversified and high quality English language program for those students wanting to improve their English language skills.
In order to achieve our mission, the ESL Institute strives to:
- offer an intensive English language program for students who desire to raise their level of English language proficiency in order to seek admission to APSU or another university.
- provide people and businesses in the community with opportunities to study English language through a general English program as well as offering private and contract lessons in order to prepare themselves for their professional careers or daily life.
- prepare students for an international career, advanced education, and participation in the global community by integrating multiple language and academic skills in a friendly and personal class setting.
- present students with cultural knowledge and awareness needed to adjust and live, both academically and socially, in the United States.

The ESL Institute office and classrooms are located in the McReynolds building on the Austin Peay State University campus.
Class size is small to provide students with personalized attention and opportunities to improve their learning skills. Depending on enrollment, classes may be divided into different levels, such as beginning, intermediate or advanced.
Instructors at the ESL Institute have taught English in the U.S. and abroad. All have strong backgrounds in education – most with Master’s degrees and concentrations in English, language and/or education – and extensive experience in teaching English to non-English speakers. In addition, most instructors have also experienced the learning of a language other than English.
Students have access to university computer labs as well as state-of-the-art SmartBoard technology utilized by trained instructors in the classroom. All students in the Intensive English program will be able to receive an APSU student ID card and all full-time students will also receive full access to other University facilities and services such as athletic events and the recreation center.
Cultural and Campus Activities
Our students experience American culture daily in many ways, and the Institute organizes at least one cultural activity trip each semester. Past excursions have included the Nashville Zoo, Country Music Hall of Fame, Graceland (in Memphis TN), and several regional destinations which highlight the history of Clarksville and the surrounding area.
ESL students will also have the opportunity to participate in campus activities provided by APSU’s Office of International Student Services and the International Student Organization (ISO).
