Competition is what makes senior biology major Alexis Hill get up each day.

Hill was the catcher/third baseman for the Governor's Softball team.

It’s why she wakes up at 4:45 a.m. to begin her conditioning program as a member of Austin Peay’s varsity softball team, it’s why she spends her mornings and afternoons in class and its why, when she’s not taking the field with her Governors teammates, she’s volunteering her time to countless student organizations and honors societies in an effort to make both herself and the campus community the best it can be.

And it’s that love of competition that’s also why, Hill says, she plans to go to medical school and pursue a career as a trauma surgeon after she graduates from Austin Peay.

“I love being under stress and I love knowing that I can thrive under pressure,” Hill said. “I’ve always been a fast-paced person and as a catcher, I like taking charge and being in a leadership role; thriving under pressure and knowing that I’m the only thing that stands between something and failure is where I’m really at my best.”

A Clarksville native, Hill had options when it came to pursing her athletic and academic careers, but in Austin Peay, she found the perfect environment with which her competitive nature could allow her to thrive.

“I really think the biggest thing I’ve learned as a student athlete at Austin Peay was how to live life and to appreciate the experiences afforded to you,” Hill said. “I’ve dealt with injuries and setbacks, but I’ve also experienced so much success, both on the field and in the classroom; I’ve had the chance to be with great teammates and coaches and get involved in so many organizations on campus off the field — I’ve really seen it all during my time here.
