Graduate Credit for Professional Development

The Austin Peay State University Department of Music now offers graduate credit to practicing music educators for participation in professional development workshops, seminars, and conferences, including TMEA, NAfME and many others. Graduate credits can be applied towards Continuing Education Units and towards a Masters Degree in Music Education at APSU.

The Professional Development course is just one of many new, exciting courses in APSU's newly revised Master of Music: Music Education Concentration Curriculum, offered as a traditional, on-campus program, and as an on-line, low-residency degree.

Process

First we will want to know more about the conference you want to attend to determine what you would like to learn at the conference, and how many credits you would like to receive. Generally, credits are based on the number of contact hours at the conference: 15 contact hours equates to 1 graduate credit; 30 hours earns two credits, and 45 or more hours leads to 3 graduate credits. There are two options at APSU regarding how you want your credits documented:

Then you will need to register for the conference and communicate with us that you are registered. As you prepare for the conference, you will complete a pre-conference self-reflection to share more about yourself as a music educator, your teaching environment, and what you would like to learn at the conference. After the conference, you will submit a post-conference written reflection about the sessions you attended, and an action plan describing how you will implement new knowledge and skills into your teaching. You will then receive a certificate from the APSU Department of Music verifying your attendance at the conference and successful completion of the appropriate number of graduate credits.

Additional details are avaialable on the Professional Development Course Syllabus.
