APSU's The New Gallery presents humanature: new works by Susan Bryant

Bryant

CLARKSVILLE, Tenn. – Austin Peay State University’s The New Gallery, with support from the APSU Center of Excellence for the Creative Arts and the APSU Department of Art + Design, will open its 2019-2020 exhibition season with humanature: new works by Susan Bryant.

Bryant is a photographer whose works includes gelatin silver prints, hand-colored silver prints, digital photographs and most recently, the 19th century wet plate collodion process, creating glass negatives, ambrotypes and tintypes. This exhibition features several bodies of work developed over recent years and is a celebration of Bryant’s recent retirement from Austin Peay, where she spent the last 37 years as a professor of art.

“This year, we’re opening up our exhibition season with a celebration of one of our own faculty members – or recently retired faculty member I should say,” Michael Dickins, director of The New Gallery, said. “Susan has been a stalwart of the Department of Art + Design for the past 37 years. It has been a joy to witness the breadth of her teaching and realize how many students she has influenced and inspired. I’ve been a fan of Susan’s work since arriving at APSU six years ago, and I am truly honored to be able to work with her in this capacity. Susan’s work is visually stunning, with a sense of fragility and self-awareness, and passion for the history of photography and photographic processes are apparent in her work.”

Bryant received her Bachelor of Art in painting from Indiana University and her MFA in photography from Indiana State University. Her work has been widely exhibited across the United States in solo and juried exhibitions, and it is included in numerous public and corporate collections. She is the recipient of a Tennessee Arts Commission Fellowship in photography and the Ovation Award for Individual Artist from the Center for Excellence in Creative Arts at Austin Peay State University.

Bryant keeps her studio in Clarksville.

The exhibit opened Monday, Aug. 26, at The New Gallery, located in the Art + Design Building on the Austin Peay campus, and it runs through Sept. 20. Bryant will be giving a public lecture on her work at 6 p.m. on Sept. 12, in the Art and Design Building’s Heydel Hall. There will be a reception the following day, Sept. 13, from noon – 1 p.m., and a gallery talk with Bryant beginning at 12:30 p.m. All events are free and open to the public.
