Why Study Professional Chemistry
Majoring in chemistry is ideal for students that want to work in a laboratory or attend graduate or professional schools. The biochemistry concentration is ideal for students that want to further their studies in health-related professional schools such as medical, pharmacy, or dental schools. The professional chemistry concentration is designed to meet requirements for an American Chemical Society accredited degree and is most helpful for students that want to attend graduate school in chemistry in the pursuit of a M.S. or Ph.D. in chemistry.
The Department of Chemistry at Austin Peay State University (APSU) is nationally certified by the American Chemical Society (ACS), devoted to student success, and prepares students for a wide variety of career options. Our mission is to educate students to think independently and critically, ethically apply chemical concepts and principles to better understand and navigate a diverse scientific world, and help them to become scientifically literate. We use innovative pedagogical and research strategies to engage students and cultivate a passion for chemistry and scientific learning.
The faculty in the Department of Chemistry at APSU have expertise in all branches of chemistry including organic, inorganic, analytical, materials, and computational chemistry and biochemistry. Faculty engage undergraduate students in a wide variety of research projects and travel with students to regional and national conferences to present the results of their research projects.
The faculty in the Department of Chemistry are dedicated to student success. The Department of Chemistry offers many opportunities for undergraduate research and study abroad opportunities to Iceland, and London, England. Students can obtain an American Chemical Society accredited degree by completing the professional chemistry concentration.
What will I Learn
- Chemistry is often called the "central science" due to the fundamental role it plays in every aspect of the world around us.
- Students majoring in Chemistry have a deep commitment to understanding how our world exists and operates on a molecular level in accordance with the laws of nature.
- Chemistry is very rigorous and involves physics and mathematics that helps students understand the driving forces of the chemical reaction.
- There are many branches of chemistry and students often gravitate to specific fields like organic, inorganic, physical, biochemistry, or materials.
