Why study B.S. CIS: Concentration Systems Development at APSU?
The APSU Computer Science and Information Technology Department has dedicated full-time faculty members and features small class sizes. All classes are taught by professors and instructors satisfying APSU Faculty Qualifications Matrix. Many classes are conducted in modern computer labs, and all classrooms are “smart” classrooms, allowing computer-based demonstrations and lectures.

What Will I Learn?
This program is for those who plan to work in some areas of computer applications in the business field. Areas of study include data communications, database management, and systems analysis and design, with an emphasis on programming in several languages that are useful for business applications.
The Freshmen Seminar degree requirement completed by most students is APSU 1000. The course is delivered in a small-class setting with like-minded students led by a faculty member and a peer leader. The interdisciplinary course is intended to support first-semester students and provide them with a foundation for university success. Emphasis is placed on student engagement, university learning success strategies, support services, library literacy, financial literacy, and academic and career planning. The first class meeting of APSU 1000 during fall semesters is on Freshmen Convocation Day.
The general education core is designed to develop critical competencies in written communication, oral communication, mathematical analysis, and critical thinking skills. Students at APSU select coursework in the general education core in the areas of Communication, Humanities and Fine Arts, Social and Behavioral Sciences, History, Natural Sciences, and Mathematics. While the general education core requirements for graduation can be met by choosing courses from each of these areas, some programs of study require lower division courses that serve as prerequisites for upper division courses. Students should consult the sample 4-year plans and confer with their academic advisors as they choose their general education core courses.
What engagement opportunities are available to APSU students?
The Association for Computing Machinery (ACM) is the first organization dedicated to the science of computing machinery. The ACM's mission is the advancement of computing as a science and a profession. The ACM Student Chapter at Austin Peay State University is the professional organization for computer science students and computer enthusiasts in the campus community. As an officially chartered ACM chapter, we are an extension of the world's premier organization in the field of computer science.
RANKED-UP ESPORTS (RUE) aims to train and send out an Esports team across different tournament fields including but not limited to First Person Shooters, Battle Royales, and Racing games, depending on the abilities of the team. Our regiment will include class like training sessions and critical playing analysis, as well as team streaming and recording sessions. RUE is a chapter of TESPA!
CYBERSECURITY CLUB aims to share cybersecurity knowledge, spread enthusiasm, and develop security skills of APSU Students and invited guest members. Technical and administrative aspects` of offensive and defensive cybersecurity will be developed, discussed, and shared. The lessons and exercises conducted in the meetings, demonstrations, and competitions are for educational and scientific purposes only.
High Impact Practices (HIPs) are effortful experiences that help students build substantive relationships, engage across differences, gain valuable feedback on their work, apply what they have learned in and out of the classroom, and provide an opportunity for reflection.
