Entrance Counseling and MPN
William D. Ford Federal Direct Subsidized and Unsubsidized Loans
Students borrowing from the Federal Direct Loan program must complete the following before receiving loan funds:
Direct Loan Entrance Counseling
- Go to studentaid.gov
- Under the “Complete Aid Process” dropdown, select “Complete Entrance Counseling.”
- Log in using your FSA ID.
- Follow the steps to complete the Entrance Counseling.
- Entrance Counseling takes 3 - 5 business days to be processed to the Office of Student Financial Aid. The requirement will show as "Needed" until the process has been completed.
Direct Loan Master Promissory Note (MPN)
- Go to studentaid.gov
- Under the “Complete Aid Process” dropdown, select “Complete a Master Promissory Note (MPN).”

Select the appropriate category (“Undergraduate Students” or “Graduate/Professional Students”, etc.).
- If you are a parent approved for the Parent PLUS Loan, you must login with your FSA
ID (used to sign your student’s FAFSA) and complete the Parent PLUS Loan MPN. Select
the requirement under “Parent Borrowers”
- If the parent uses the student's FSA ID to complete the Parent PLUS Loan MPN, it will automatically list the student as the borrower and the MPN will be rejected.
- If you are a parent approved for the Parent PLUS Loan, you must login with your FSA
ID (used to sign your student’s FAFSA) and complete the Parent PLUS Loan MPN. Select
the requirement under “Parent Borrowers”
- Log in using your FSA ID
- Follow the steps to complete the appropriate MPN.
- The MPN takes 3 - 5 business days to be processed to the Office of Student Financial Aid. The requirement will show as "Needed" until the process has been completed.
