IRB Committee Meetings
IRB Review Process
The IRB oversees all research involving human subjects at Austin Peay State University to ensure ethical standards and regulatory compliance. The review process aims to protect participants’ rights and welfare while facilitating quality research.
Types of IRB Review
-
Full Review
Research projects posing more than minimal risk to participants require a full board review, discussed in the IRB’s reoccuring meetings. Investigators submit a complete protocol in advance, and the project is reviewed by the committee. The review may involve clarifying questions or requested modifications. A decision on approval is usually issued shortly after the meeting. -
Expedited Review
Projects involving minimal risk, such as surveys or non-invasive data collection, may qualify for an expedited review. Expedited review does not mean faster processing; rather, it is a review conducted by fewer IRB members. Research eligible for expedited review is still carefully evaluated for ethical standards, participant protections, and compliance. Once reviewed, the IRB will notify the investigator of the decision or request clarifications or changes if necessary. -
What to Expect in Expedited Review
If your research is eligible for expedited review, the IRB will assign it to a qualified reviewer who will assess the proposal outside of the regular meeting schedule. The reviewer evaluates:
- The level of risk posed to participants
- The research’s ethical standards and scientific merit
- Confidentiality and data security measures
The expedited review generally takes [time estimate, e.g., 1–2 weeks] from submission to decision, though timelines may vary. Researchers will receive a notice of approval, a request for modifications, or a deferral if additional review is necessary.

Typically, IRB reviews are virtual and done on an as needed basis. The expedited process remains the same.
Please submit an electronic copy of your application at least two weeks before an approval is needed. Electronic copies must be sent to IRB@apsu.edu. All applications MUST include a signed signature page and current CITI Ethics Training Certificate(s).
