John Paul Powers
John Paul Powers is a native of Clinton, Tennessee and is currently Adjunct Professor of Tuba and Euphonium at Austin Peay State University. Previously, he was Associate Instructor of Tuba at the Indiana University Jacobs School of Music, where he is currently a candidate for the Doctor of Music degree in Tuba Performance with a minor in Music Education. John has a Master of Music degree in Tuba Performance from Indiana University and a Bachelor of Music degree from Tennessee Tech University. At Tech he was a member of the Tennessee Tech Tuba Ensemble, the first and most recorded ensemble of its kind. He performed with the ensemble at Carnegie Hall in 2014. John was the winner of the 2016 Yamaha Young Performing Artist Competition. He was the principal tuba in Carnegie Hall’s 2013 National Youth Orchestra of the United States of America. The orchestra under the direction of Maestro Valery Gergiev performed in New York, Washington, Moscow, St. Petersburg, and the BBC Proms in London. John was second place in the Leonard Falcone and International Tuba Euphonium Conference (ITEC) Young Artist competitions in 2014. He was first runner up overall and wind division winner in the Nashville Symphony Curb Records Concerto Competition in 2013. John was a semi-finalist in the ITEC solo competition in Linz, Austria. John has studied with Daniel Perantoni, Dr. Demondrae Thurman, Sergio Carolino, R.Winston Morris, Tony Kniffen, Dr. Sean Greene, Sande MacMorran and Jamie Warren.
