GOVS CARE: PEER EDUCATORS
Peer Educators are students who work with the Student Affairs Office under the DELTA Impact grant. These students will provide training to their peer groups around the topic of Interpersonal Violence Prevention, specifically peer educators provide the Upstander training around sexual violence. Peer educators will be expected to collaborate with offices and student organizations on campus to plan and implement this training.
- Campus Community Education- Peer educators create positive change in the community by teaching Bring In the Bystander based training. Each Peer Educator is responsible for presenting the Upstander curriculum twice per semester. Additional topical areas will be added in the future (suicide prevention, healthy life style issues, financial literacy, Alcohol/Tobacco/Other Drug discussions)
- Role Modeling- Peer Educators serve as mentors and teachers on campus. As such, Peer Educators are expected to abide by all University policies and make healthy and informed decisions, while maintaining confidentiality.
- Administrative- Peer Educators are expected to submit all pre/post survey’s from the training sessions, communicate with the Graduate Assistant on training needs (food, location, etc.), and provide publicity for the training within the peer group.
In general, Peer Educators are expected to contribute 10 hours per month to this role.
- Organize trainings (food, location, publicity, audience)
- Facilitation of programming (2 hours)
- Turn in all pre/post surveys
- Attend all staff meetings/trainings
In order to effectively do the job, Peer Educators are given ample training to ensure they feel confident and equipped to be a resource and mentor on campus. It is expected that PE’s should not have any work related or co-curricular responsibilities during these dates/times.
- Virtual training late August/early September
- Monthly staff meeting- 2nd Monday each month 5:00-6:00 p.m.
- Certification as a Peer Educator through NASPA (National Association Student Personnel Association)
- Improve your leadership and communication skills
- Gain experience in program planning and presentation
- All Peer Educators will receive a t-shirt/polo
- Housing (on campus residents only) and meals will be provided during training
- Peer Educators must be in good academic and disciplinary standing with the University.
- Preference will be given to applicants who will be on campus for both the fall and spring semesters.
