Submission portal open Feb. 17-28, 2025 Open to all APSU students. Entrants must have been enrolled during the 2024-2025 academic years at Austin Peay State University. Works must have been produced between January 2024 and March 2025 and not exhibited in previous juried student exhibitions at APSU. All media are eligible for submission but must be completed by the entry date; no work may be changed or altered after entering. None! There is no fee to submit your work for consideration. Each student is allowed 4 entries per person. Group submissions count as 1 entry per each person in the group. All media is welcome: Animation, Ceramics, Drawing, Illustration, Intermedia, Mixed Media, Painting, Photography, Printmaking, Sculpture, Graphic Design, Foundations (Foundations I, II, III, Drawing I & II), Video and Time-based art.
Kariann Fuqua (b. 1976, Oklahoma) is an abstract artist using drawing and painting to investigate the edges of environmental disaster. She received her BFA in painting from Kansas State University and an MFA in painting from the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign. Her work has been widely exhibited in solo and group shows across the United States including Stand4 Gallery (Brooklyn, NY), Jenkins-Johnson Gallery (San Francisco, CA), Governors Island (New York, NY), Hyde Park Arts Center (Chicago, IL), Byron Cohen Gallery (Kansas City, MO), Manifest Gallery and Drawing Center(Cincinnati, OH), Stoveworks (Chattanooga, TN), Athens Institute of Contemporary Art (Athens, GA), and the Mississippi Museum of Art (Jackson, MS). In 2008, she was awarded a public commission at McCormick Place in Chicago. She received a Joan Mitchell Foundation full fellowship to the Vermont Studio Center and an Individual Artist Fellowship from the Mississippi Arts Commission. She was recently awarded grants from the Puffin Foundation and South Arts, and her work was published in New American Paintings, F Stop Magazine, and the Artist’s Magazine. She currently lives and works in Oxford, Mississippi. $2400+ in total award monies

The judge(s) select which works will be featured in the exhibition. The judge(s) may also be responsible for assigning awards/prizes if any.
YES. Works created as part of course assignments are encouraged. YES. Works created outside of classroom assignments are encouraged. Click the Submit Here link above and follow the instructions. Accepted submission formats: .jpeg, .pdf, .mp3, .mp4, .mov. Video and Time-based Media (including Animation files): Accepted time-based media should be submitted as a .mov/.mp4 (encoded with H.264/AVC, VC1, and MPEG1/2/4, up to 1920x1080, 30fps, 10mbps) file on a dedicated thumb drive.
Please submit your video work as HD 1920x1080. No. You are not limited to the work created as part of your degree path. Though it is our intention to showcase works from all areas of study, it is up to the discretion of the juror based upon works that are submitted. Yes. We know there are Middle College students taking APSU courses, therefore it is also open to Middle College students. No. The exhibition is limited to roughly 50 pieces +/- and is dependant of size/type of artwork selected. Yes. It is possible for someone to have all 4 of their submissions selected for the exhibition. See 'blind jury' below. A 'blind jury' process is where the juror does not know who the artist is and is selected based solely on the work itself (title, art file, medium, dimensions). Selected Work FAQ's No. Though framing artwork is highly encouraged, it is not a requirement. If selected artwork is not framed, the artist must state how it is to be displayed. If this work is framed, it must be wired. Sawtooth hangers will not be accepted. Director Michael Dickins must approve the hanging methods of unframed works. Please contact Michael Dickins, dickinsm@apsu.edu, immediately upon notification of acceptance with any special instructions. Professional presentation of artwork is critical for an exhibition. The New Gallery reserves the right to refuse accepted work that is deemed unsafe, or otherwise unsuitable for handling (i.e., poorly constructed, poorly framed or environmentally hazardous). We do not endorse one framer over another - so a simple google search will reveal local framers. If you're interested in framing yourself, we (the collection) uses Frame It Easy. (This link includes APSU's referal code to save you 10%.) You should allow 2-3weeks if you're having your work framed, so plan accordingly. For installation pieces, the artist must be prepared to handle the installation. No. Accepted 3D works will be displayed on gallery pedestals or per instructions (to the best of our ability). If you have a specific display stand/shelf that is part of the piece, Please contact director Michael Dickins, dickinsm@apsu.edu for approval. Accepted time-based media should be submitted as a .mov/.mp4 file on a dedicated USB
thumb drive with your name and submission# written on the outside. Selected artwork must be delivered to The New Gallery April 3-4 between 9am-3pm - and accepted by a gallery attendant. For special arrangements outside of this time window, please contact the director of The New Gallery, Michael Dickins, dickinsm@apsu.edu. Work not delivered to The New Gallery by April 4, 3p WILL NOT be included in the exhibition. For special arrangements outside of the dropoff time window, please contact Michael Dickins, dickinsm@apsu.edu. It depends on the time-signatures of the selected works. (i.e., a 5-min. piece may be displayed singularly as several :30 pieces may be shown as a group). It is possible for us to include several time-based video pieces on the same screen in a loop which allows for the possibility of more video/times-based works to be selected. Every precaution will be taken in handling and display of artwork. Work will be insured
while in The New Gallery under APSU's umbrella insurance policy ($500 max for student
work). Exhibition participants must refrain from touching their own or anyone else's
artwork. The Department of Art + Design reserves the right to photograph accepted artwork for
promotional purposes. To uphold the integrity of the exhibition and the experience
of the visitor, photographing artwork for portfolios during the exhibition is prohibited.
Photographs for portfolios must be taken before artwork is submitted. The New Gallery and the Department of Art + Design do not handle sales of artwork. If your work is for sale, please mark it as such during submission. If a visitor is interested in purchasing artwork, the Gallery will forward the patron's contact information to the artist, and any transaction will be between the artist and patron. We will not reveal the artist's contact information without expressed written consent from the artist. Any sold artwork will not be removed until after the exhibition has closed. Artist must pick up their work from The New Gallery on Thursday, May 1 from 9am - 3pm. and Friday, May 2 from 9am - 3pm. A student ID is required to pick up your artwork. Work not picked up by 3pm on Friday, May 2, will be turned over to the Department of Art + Design for disposal. Yes, but we will not release your artwork to anyone else without expressed written consent from the you (artist) made in advance to the director of The New Gallery, Michael Dickins, dickinsm@apsu.edu. Yes. We make every attempt to make sure this doesn't happen, but we cannot store your work indefinitely. No. Works that received a CECA, or Hazel Smith, Purchase Award do not need to be picked-up after the exhibition. The work will be accessed into APSU’s Art Collection upon the completion of the exhibition. Awards Night FAQ's Awards Night is the closing reception for the Juried Student Exhibition. This is where we celebrate the work in the exhibition and announce the award winners, and celebrate the end of the academic year. Awards Night will be held on April 30 from 5:30-7pm. Awards will be announced beginning at 6p in The New Gallery. No. Though attendance at Awards Night is highly encouraged. The juror will visit the exhibition to see the work in person, then assign the juror
designated awards. No and Yes. All works in the exhibition are available to receive juror-designated awards and the Faculty Choice Award. Only those works marked 'for sale' will be considered for purchase awards. If your work is selected for a CECA, or Hazel Smith, Purchase Award, the work will be accessioned into APSU’s Art Collection upon the completion of the exhibition. Yes. It is possible to win multiple awards.
