Honors Faculty Fellows

The University Honors Program Faculty Fellows incorporates teaching, learning, research, and service to both an academic discipline and the University Honors Program. University Honors Program Faculty Fellows engage deeply with high-achieving students in general education core and Honors Program coursework.

Role Overview

University Honors Program Faculty Fellows will:

• Report to the Executive Director of University Honors Programs in the University College
• Teach general education core courses
• Design innovative honors courses
• Foster interdisciplinary learning
• Cultivate a vibrant intellectual community

Faculty Fellows take an active role in shaping the academic direction of the Honors Program by:

• Advocating for rigor and excellence
• Nurturing students' intellectual curiosity and critical thinking skills
• Supporting the values of APSU by fostering academic excellence and personal growth
• Developing a sense of community through kindness and integrity
• Working collaboratively with students, faculty, and staff to ensure that high-achieving students are life-long learners

Contributions

Faculty Fellows contribute to the college's mission by:

• Serving as mentors
• Fostering a supportive environment for student research
• Promoting a culture of academic achievement
• Inspiring and empowering the next generation of scholars
• Preparing students for leadership roles in their respective fields

Responsibilities

Key responsibilities include:

• Teaching at least one lower division course designated for honors in the faculty member’s discipline per semester (e.g., HIST 2310, ENGL 1010, PSYC 1030)
• Teaching at least one HON class per semester (e.g., HON 1045, HON 2220, HON 2510, HON 300a)
• Teaching at least one student success course each fall as overload pay eligible (e.g., HON 1000)
• Participating in Honors Commons events and supporting recruiting efforts
• Engaging in mentoring and service activities to support the scholarly community of students in the University Honors Program

Term of Service: Two years, starting fall 2025.

Qualifications

Required:

• Tenured Faculty
• Approval of Department Chair to apply
• Approval of Dean to apply

Preferred:

• Experience teaching honors courses or honors-designated courses
• Experience engaging with students through high impact practices and/or co-curricular activities

Selection Process

Interested faculty will submit a brief application packet (with four attachments) to honors@apsu.edu that include:

1. A statement of purpose addressing:
   • Why you want to become an Honors Faculty Fellow
   • The value you will bring to the Honors Program
   • Your perspective on this position in terms of your professional development
2. A current copy of your Curriculum Vitae
3. A one-sentence statement of approval from your Department Chair
4. A one-sentence statement of approval from your College Dean

A selection committee chaired by the Executive Director of University Honors Programs will review and recommend Faculty Fellows. The final slate of Faculty Fellows will be presented to the Provost and Deans for endorsement.

For the current, spring 2025 application cycle, we will be appointing one new Faculty Fellow.  That person will begin their two-year term of service in the fall of 2025.

Timeline: Applications are open from 17 - 21 February 2025. Decisions will be made and candidates notified by 3 March.
