Teaching Consultations

CAFE offers teaching consultations upon request of a faculty member. All consultants are senior faculty members who are considered experts in pedagogy, best teaching and learning practices, and content experts. Faculty consultants are NOT part of your formal evaluation process, all consultations are voluntary, formative, and individually conducted.

All consultants are held individually beginning with an introductory meeting to discuss your needs and/or specific course goals.

Common Consultation Topics

Choose from a range of consultation subjects that best suits your needs. Feel free to raise other related topics with the consultants during the scheduled meeting.

Teaching Observation is a great tool that helps you become a more intentional instructor. Prior to the observation, there will be a pre-brief session where you will be expected to provide details of the course objectives and focus areas to the consultant. The consultant will be able to get a sense of your class as a student will and share this perspective with you in the after class review session. The consultant will help you reflect on your teaching choices and understanding of your student learning needs.

Many assessment strategies are built on the foundation of curriculum mapping, both at the program level and at the course level. The Teaching Consultants are available to assist you if you need help comprehending what a curriculum map is and how to develop one.

The course syllabus serves as a roadmap for your class and establishes the level of participation and expectations. It is important to ensure your course syllabus contains all the necessary information and resources for students in an accessible and engaging format.

Discuss effective teaching in different modes, constructing exams, and effective grading procedures. We are also delighted to go through effective test item writing techniques and how to understand item analyses.

Get assistance developing new classes or redesigning existing ones. Course Redesign enables instructors to revamp their course based on feedback from students, peers, anduniversal design incorporating the best practices for learning and building inclusive classrooms.

We help you implement teaching methods, assignments, and classroom practices that help ensure that all students, regardless of background, feel welcomed, valued, challenged, and supported to succeed in the classroom.

We can help you design and implement successful teaching in various forms, and inspiring and engaging students. The teaching consultants are here to assist you in figuring out the best tools, and best practices that  will be the most beneficial for keeping students engaged in your course.

CAFE - Mid-course Student Interviews

CAFE also offers a structured way to gather midterm feedback from your students. Students will be asked to participate and may volunteer as a participant in the course interview process. These interviews will provide a safe space for students to give anonymous course feedback to the CAFE consultant.

After the Mid-course Student Interview, faculty can expect the following:

  1. Data from Student Responses
  2. Examples from and Individual Feedback from Students
  3. Analysis of Student Feedback
  4. Suggestions for Using Student Feedback

Faculty may request a Mid-course Student Interview by contacting cafe-fac@apsu.edu
